In his autobiography, Lettin' It All Hang Out (Hyperion 1995), RuPaul Andre Charles says, "Life can be whatever you
want it to be. All you have to do is make a wish."
That said, RuPaul's life has been a fantastic voyage from a little boy growing up in an all female household in San
Diego to a teenager who helped sell used cars in Atlanta, from a star of Manhattan nightlife to a chart-topping
recording artist who has gone on to super-stardom as a performer, actor, television talk show host, author, morning
radio deejay and cosmetics spokesperson.
His mother was the person he most admired while growing up. "She was the fiercest drag queen I've ever known".
RuPaul enjoyed three seasons of his TV talk-show, "The RuPaul Show", on VH1. RuPaul welcomed guests Mary Tyler Moore,
kd lang, Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, LaToya Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Isabella Rossellini, Ivana Trump, Anna
Nicole Smith, Olivia Newton-John...the list goes on into talk show infinity. Introduced on VH1 as "The Girl With
Something Extra", it was a dream come true for RuPaul to have his idols across from him on the couch. With a sense of
destiny in his voice, Ru says, "I was meant to be on television...I speak television fluently!"
RuPaul has taped featured guest roles on various primetime programs both in and out of drag such as, "Veronica's Closet",
"Sister, Sister", "In The House", "The Crew", "Sabrina The Teenage Witch", "Walker, Texas Ranger", and a recurring
role in "Nash Bridges", as well as an appearance in Fox's Jennifer Love Hewitt pilot, "The Time of Your Life". His
first television lead dramatic "male-drag" role was in the Emmy®-nominated and much acclaimed USA Network movie, "A
Mother's Prayer", which was followed by a second "male-drag" role in another USA Network movie, "An Unexpected Life"
with Stockard Channing. Ru's personal television highlight was a guest appearance on ABC's most acclaimed daytime soap,
"All My Children". Ru had a "blast" voicing the role of the Rock Guardian on the Saturday morning Disney animated
television series, "Hercules".
RuPaul is no stranger to the big screen, having had featured roles in Spike Lee's "Crooklyn", "The Brady Bunch Movie",
"Wigstock: The Movie", Wayne Wang's "Blue In The Face", "Too Wong Foo...Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar","Fled" and
"A Very Brady Sequel". Recently, RuPaul completed the male-drag role of Mike for the Fine Line independent feature,
"But I'm A Cheerleader", a satirical comedy about ex-gays starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall and Cathy Moriarty,
which will screen in exhibition at Sundance 2000. He also narrated the Cinemax documentary film, "The Eyes of Tammy
Faye", which will screen in competition at Sundance.
RuPaul released three albums, the latest of which was "RuPaul's Go Go Box Classics", a dance compilation CD which
salutes his former career as a club dancer atop a go-go box at Weekend's Disco in Atlanta, Georgia. This collection
features 18 Ru-selected tracks, also including "Get Loose", a previously unreleased RuPaul song, as well as the recent
dance hit, "It's Raining Men...The Sequel", which hit number one on the UK Pop/Dance Charts. RuPaul inspires you to
"Clear off that coffee table and spit out your gum, because tonight you're the featured dancer on the go-go-box!"
His sophomore album, appropriately called "Foxy Lady", was released on Rhino Records to rave reviews in 1996. Billboard
said it "...offers a glimpse into a soulful stylist who needs to be heard far more frequently in the future".
RuPaul first made himself known to the world in 1993 when his internationally released debut album, "Supermodel Of The
World" garnered three #1 Billboard maxi-single chart hits. Later, he was a featured artist on the movie soundtrack
album, "The Addams Family Values", as well as Elton John's certified gold, "Duets" album. Ru & Elton John recorded
"Don't Go Breakin' My Heart," which was an instant smash hit throughout Europe and the United States. RuPaul's most
recent vocal recording can be heard in the dance mix of "I'm Super" on the recent "South Park" film soundtrack. Also,
keep an ear out for RuPaul's upcoming duet with L'il Kim, a remake of the disco classic, "Bad Girls".
